If you decide to fire your lawyer, the best way to do so is in writing, either by email, postal mail, or text message. Your notice of dismissal should inform the lawyer of the reason for the decision and you should also give instructions on where to send a copy of your file. If you fire your lawyer to take care of yourself, do so in writing and keep a copy of the letter. If the lawyer has filed documents with the court, you must also file a waiver in which you name yourself as the new lawyer “In Pro Per” or “Pro Se”, which means that you represent yourself.
